How Are Rectangular Ducts Made?

July 12, 2024 HVAC & Duct

Rectangular ducts, commonly used in HVAC systems, are typically manufactured through a process involving sheet metal fabrication. The process typically begins with flat sheets of metal. These sheets are then fed into a machine called a ductwork coil line, where they undergo a series of operations including cutting, bending, and forming.

Where Can I Get Rectangular Ducts Made?

Rectangular ducts can be either custom-made or purchased from HVAC supply stores, building supply companies, or even some specialized online retailers.

Typically manufactured in specialized fabrication facilities equipped with machinery for sheet metal fabrication, rectangular ducts are made by manufacturers that supply ductwork to residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

Additionally, some larger HVAC equipment manufacturers may have their own facilities for producing ductwork. These facilities may be located near their main manufacturing plants or strategically situated to serve specific geographic regions. For example, the production of rectangular ducts tends to be concentrated in areas with a high demand for HVAC systems and construction activity, as well as access to the necessary raw materials and skilled labor force.

What Metals Are Used to Make Rectangular Ducts?

According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), “Rectangular ductwork is typically manufactured from flat metal sheets, which are cut and formed into the desired shapes and sizes using specialized equipment such as shears, brakes, and rollers.” These sheets are made of metals such as galvanized steel, aluminum, or stainless steel

How Do You Join Rectangular Ducts?

Once the metal sheets are cut to size, they are bent into the desired rectangular shape using a brake press or bending machine. Next, the edges of the duct sections are joined together using various methods such as welding, riveting, or flanging to create airtight seams.

Throughout the fabrication process, precise measurements and quality control checks are essential to ensure that the ducts meet the required specifications for airflow, pressure resistance, and structural integrity.
